As silicon wafer production technology has evolved in accordance with the demands of the integrated circuit “chip” manufacturers, silicon wafers have gradually increased in size from 25mm silicon wafers to the current largest available diameter of 450mm. The larger the diameter of the silicon wafer, the larger the surface area and the more chips that can be manufactured from a single wafer. More chips per silicon wafer equal lower cost per chip for the chip maker.
With the industry’s cost-cutting shift to the larger silicon wafer diameters, all of the major silicon manufacturers have ceased production of the smaller wafers. This constriction in supply has created a challenge for universities and research and development facilities that continue to rely on the smaller diameter wafers, while creating an opportunity for smaller, secondary players to begin production.
WaferNet recognizes both the need and the opportunity. It leverages its strategic industry alliances to provide silicon wafers in a wide range of diameters, grades and specifications. Our extensive, on-site inventory allow us to quickly fulfill complex and large volume orders.
